Marriage License

Where can we get our license?

You may apply at any town or city clerk’s office. It may take roughly a ½ hour to complete the application.

How much does the license cost?

The license costs $45.00 and may only be paid for with cash.

What type of information is needed when applying?

You should have a driver's license, non driver's I.D. or passport.

Some additional information should have:

  • Social Security Number
  • Race
  • Ancestry
  • Years of Education
  • Date of Birth
  • State of Birth
  • Certified record of date last marriage ended, if applicable
  • Father's Full Name and State of Birth
  • Mother's Full Name (Maiden) and State of Birth
What if one or both the partners have been divorced or widowed?

Documents of divorce or date of spouse’s death must be provided. You should bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate. If you do not have these, they may be ordered online.

Do both parties need to be present when applying?

Yes. Both parties must be present and sign the application.

If one of us is in the military and cannot be present prior to ceremony date, what do we do?

Contact the county clerk’s office for special instructions.

When should I get the marriage license?

To be safe you should apply for your license at least one month prior to your wedding date. There is no mandatory waiting period after your license is issued to the date of your marriage.

How long is the license valid?

The license is valid for 90 days from the date of the application.

Do you have to live in the state of New Hampshire to be eligible for a NH marriage license?

No. There are no residency requirements to obtain a license that is valid statewide.

Do we have to be married in the same town where we obtained the license?

No. The license is valid anywhere in New Hampshire

Is there an age requirement?

Yes. You must be 18 years of age or older to marry without parental consent. It is possible that a birth certificate may be required.

If either person to be married is under 18, parents or guardians must be present. If a parent cannot be present due to death, separation, divorce, or other reason, proper proof is required. You must also present your birth certificates. No one under 16 years of age may marry without a court order.

Is there any blood tests or physical exams?

No. There are no requirements for blood tests or physical exams.

Who can perform the marriage?

A judge, Supreme Court justice, assistant judge, justice of the peace, priest, rabbi, or minister residing in New Hampshire, or recognized by the State of New Hampshire.

 If the officiate you choose does not reside in New Hampshire, or is not recognized by the State of New Hampshire, they must file for a special license (for that marriage only) from the Secretary of State in Concord, New Hampshire.

How do I get a copy of the marriage certificate for a name change?

If you would like to change your name legally, you can request a copy in person or in writing from the town clerks office. You should allow at least 2 weeks after you are married for the license to be available.
